Many congratulations to Julie Ma who was one of the folk I met on-line as part of the Curtis Brown Studio. Richard and Judy have chosen her novel, Happy Families as the winner of their ‘Search for a Bestseller’ competition. Julie is wonderful and her novel is a great read. I highly recommend it.
Sad that the Studio has come to an end. The best thing has been reading the writings of fellow participants. What amazing worlds are being created, all of which deserve to be read and enjoyed by millions. So much creativity and such beautiful writing. I wish everyone the very best luck and hope for the future.
Met Suzannah Dunn in Bath for lunch. What a privilege to spend time with someone who is so ready to help me on my writing journey. Mostly I have learned that the small intimate details are what build a story and a character. Also, go easy on the melodrama! And finally, be careful of cliché, as in the old wise woman who offers pearls of wisdom when the protagonist needs reassurance and insight.
I am so pleased to be working with a great group of writers as part of a Curtis Brown Studio. Best of all we have Suzannah Dunn as our mentor and guide. She has already given so much time to us and has entered our discussions with such enthusiasm and commitment, that I am amazed that she still has time to work on her own novel.
