This involved interviewing potential students and then helping them navigate the occasionally turbulent waters of their degree courses. With my colleagues, Jenny Hobbs (Principal) and Dr Gill Boughton (Vice-Principal), I am proud to say that many students were saved from drowning (metaphorically).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, to reassure the readers of \u2018Bug\u2019, my first novel, not\u00a0<em>everything\u00a0<\/em>in the novel is based on experience.\u00a0All characters and events are fictitious. I have invented a university and a city that may <em>resemble<\/em> Durham, but exists only in a parallel universe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I studied creative writing at the University of Edinburgh and took a <em>Curtis Brown Creative<\/em> course and then became part of their\u00a0<em>Writers\u2019 Studio<\/em>.\u00a0\u00a0I have written a number of short stories and won the \u2018Dragon\u2019s Pen\u2019 award from <em>The Glasgow Women\u2019s Library<\/em> for my story \u2018Colour\u2019 (published on this site).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One of my strongest motivations is the desire to break down the walls and barriers between people of different nations, creed, colour or sexuality. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I was born in England, live in Edinburgh, and love the islands of Scotland, especially Orkney.
